영웅은 은퇴하지 않는다. 다만 무대를 옮길 뿐이다.
고대 신화 속 신들은 인간보다 오래 살았고, 그들의 이야기는 시대를 건너 우상의 이미지와 서사로 살아남아 왔다. 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하고 있는 아이리스 자연 김은 오늘날 마블의 슈퍼히어로들 안에서 이러한 신화적 원형을 발견한다. 이들은 완전무결한 존재가 아니라, 정체성과 선택, 상실과 재탄생을 반복하는 현대적 주체로서 다시 태어난 영웅들이다.

이 전시에서 작가는 마블 캐릭터들을 단순한 대중문화 아이콘이 아닌 현대 신화의 등장인물로 다시 배치한다. 강렬한 이미지로 소비되던 영웅들은 작가의 화면 안에서 별자리와 은하, 우주의 시공간 속으로 이동하고, 신과 인간, 과거와 현재, 현실과 상상의 경계를 넘나드는 존재가 된다. 작가에게 우주와 별자리는 장식적 배경이 아니라, 신화가 다시 기록되는 새로운 무대이다. 고대의 신들이 하늘의 별로 남았 듯, 슈퍼히어로들 또한 미래의 신화로 남을 가능성을 지닌 존재로 암시된다.

아스가르드는 한때 신들의 세계였지만, 작가는 신화를 고정된 과거가 아니라 시대마다 새롭게 호출되고 다시 그려지는 살아 있는 구조로 바라본다. 북유럽 신화의 계보 위에 놓인 마블 캐릭터들은 대중문화의 언어를 거쳐 다시 회화적·우주적 이미지로 확장된다. 신화는 더 이상 숭배의 대상이 아니라 지금-여기에서 생성되는 서사가 된다. 캔버스를 가득 채운 영웅의 형상과 별의 궤적, 은하의 흐름은 과거의 신화, 현재의 이미지, 미래의 상상력을 하나의 시간선 위에 포개 놓는다.

그리고 이제, 작가는 신화가 우주로 향하는 순간을 상상한다. ‘아스가르디아’—우주국가라는 현실의 실험은 신화가 이야기의 영역을 넘어 정치, 기술, 공동체를 상상하는 언어로 확장될 수 있음을 보여준다. 작가는 질문한다. 영웅은 사라지는가, 아니면 다른 차원으로 이동하는가. 그의 화면 속에서 영웅들은 아직 끝나지 않았다. 그들은 지금, 우주로 가는 중이다.

Superheroes Don’t Retire​

​

Heroes do not retire. They simply move to another stage.
In ancient mythology, gods outlived humans, and their stories survived across time as iconic images and enduring narratives. Based in Los Angeles, Iris Jayeon Kim discovers these mythological archetypes within today’s Marvel superheroes. They are not flawless beings, but modern subjects—heroes reborn through cycles of identity, choice, loss, and regeneration.
In this exhibition, the artist repositions Marvel characters not as products of popular culture, but as figures of contemporary mythology. Once consumed as powerful visual icons, these heroes are relocated within constellations, galaxies, and cosmic space-time. They become beings that traverse the boundaries between gods and humans, past and present, reality and imagination. For the artist, the universe and the stars are not decorative backdrops, but sites where myth is rewritten. Just as ancient gods were once inscribed in the night sky, superheroes are suggested as potential myths of the future.
Asgard was once the realm of the gods, yet the artist views myth not as a fixed past, but as a living structure—one that is continually summoned and redrawn by each era. Placed upon the lineage of Norse mythology, Marvel characters pass through the language of popular culture and expand once again into painterly and cosmic imagery. Myth is no longer an object of worship, but a narrative generated in the here and now. The heroic figures that fill the canvas, along with stellar orbits and galactic currents, layer ancient myth, contemporary imagery, and future imagination onto a single timeline.
The artist ultimately envisions the moment when myth turns toward the cosmos.
Asgardia—the real-world experiment of a space nation—demonstrates how myth can extend beyond storytelling into a language for imagining politics, technology, and new forms of community. The artist poses a question: Do heroes disappear, or do they simply move into another dimension?
In her paintings, the heroes have not yet reached their end.
They are still on their way—into space.
