Sincere Offerings: A Table Setting with Absence Sincere Offerings: A Table Setting with Absence' exhibition is more than a physical installation-it is a space for emotional exchange and shared storytelling. This exhibition presents the Very Proper Table Settings series, in which memories and emotions become artistic material, planting seeds for deeper and lasting human connection. In this series, individuals from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds are invited to recreate a table setting using empty korean traditional tableware —no food is present.
The absence of food is not merely a lack; it prompts viewers to reflect on the essence of a meal and what it means to prepare something with sincerity for someone else. Each participant brings their own background and story, placing them onto the table through their arrangement of the vessels. In doing so, the meal becomes more than sustenance—it becomes a cultural and relational connector.
By intentionally omitting physical food, the artist highlights the memories, care, empathy, and solidarity that meals often embody. Empty bowls quietly testify to the warmth of sharing a meal, the comfort of home, and the unspoken language of love and devotion. The work asks: when what we consider essential is absent, what remains? In this space, the spirit of a meal transcends its physical form, opening up new grounds for cross-cultural empathy.
Participants create their own table settings, layering them with personal memories and narratives.
The artist listens closely, weaving these stories into the artwork and returning them as part of the collective experience. The Korean tableware used is not merely an object but a vessel for memory and emotional resonance—a cultural symbol in itself.
Participants are encouraged to reinterpret the function of each vessel, allowing the act of sharing food to reflect sincerity and thoughtfulness. The resulting table setting becomes a site of profound connection between participants and the artist, transcending cultural boundaries.
Through these inedible meals, the work invites viewers to consider that honesty and heartfelt intention may carry greater weight than material presence.
Using Joomchi, a traditional Korean paper-craft technique of soaking and hand-pounding mulberry paper, the artist casts the table settings, preserving their forms in textured paper.
This delicate, labor-intensive process captures the fleeting, intangible essence of a shared meal.
By emphasizing absence, the work underscores presence.
The paper-cast vessels, though fragile, become resilient symbols of shared rituals, cultural ties, and heartfelt connection. In capturing what is unseen —memory, tradition, and care-the artist transforms the act of setting a table into a bridge for understanding and empathy across difference.
'Sincere Offerings: A Table Setting with Absence exhibition invites us to revisit memory, to see one another anew, and to experience a space and time shaped by art, story, and the sincere gesture of offering a meal.
