statement
To build a life is to gather and assemble scattered fragments. Each piece may appear incomplete on its own, yet when brought into relation, they form a structure—one that finds its own balance over time. This process is not a fixed composition, but a trajectory slowly unfolding.
Based in Los Angeles, April EJ Oh has spent over two decades working as a fashion designer. Her background—spanning fashion design in the United States and Japan, and contemporary jewelry in Italy—has cultivated a deep understanding of structure, material, and the repetitive labor of the hand. These sensibilities continue to inform
her textile practice, shaping both form and composition.
This exhibition begins with the traditional Korean technique of jogakbo , evolving into geometric forms and three-dimensional textile structures. Textile, thread, and paper—each carrying different textures and temporalities—are layered and assembled into a sensory structure. Rather than erasing what came before, the artist builds upon it, creating works that exist as accumulations of time.
Here, stitched lines function not merely as connections, but as thresholds—simultaneously boundaries and passages, sites of separation and continuity. These lines do not define a fixed form; instead, they trace movement, choice, and lived experience, revealing the trajectory of a life.
The “map” presented here does not offer a fixed route or destination. It is not a guide, but a record—an open structure shaped by time, decisions, and the quiet persistence of making.
For her, the act of making extends beyond creation; it is a way of moving through and organizing daily life. Within the rhythm of repeated gestures, instability settles into moments of balance, and tension transforms into quiet resolution. The resulting works become spaces of reflection, where dispersed experiences gather into a new order.
In the exhibition space, natural light enters and lingers. Passing through the window, it moves across the surface of textile, resonating with folds and structure. Shadows shift slowly, redrawing the work over time. The pieces do not remain fixed as objects, but exist as traces—formed through light, air, and duration.
What fragments do we gather as we live? What kind of trajectory do they form? Life is not a completed map, but a quiet trajectory—continuously unfolding through time.
We cannot see light, yet light allows us to see. Light is the oldest language that has illuminated the universe, and the energy that breathed life into matter made of elements. We cannot know the essence of time, yet we live within time. We know that all moments are closely woven and accumulated, becoming time at last. The moment we call now always turns into the past with great speed. A garden is filled only with life. The instinct of life, the will toward living, is what makes a garden beautiful. It does not complain against the trials of the seasons; it blooms, withers, and yields. Perhaps this will toward life, this life (生), is the very will to remember moments of light, and perhaps it is the calling given to all living things. Life is finite. But the light of the universe and the accumulation of all moments are eternal. And so, within the garden that remembers moments of light, our lives, through art, become eternally finite and finitely eternal. Here, traces are not what has disappeared, but what remains—an unseen structure that forms the present. Fragments of memory and emotion are reconnected, creating new meanings through each viewer’s experience. Time does not fade. It remains within us, layer upon layer. What traces do we leave behind, and how will we be remembered?
ARTIST
Under the slogan "Technology for Art and Philosophy," Seattle-based fine art startup G-1.ART presented its inaugural exhibition of 2023, [Line · Surface · Space], at Kote in Insadong. Nine abstract paintings and collage works by two emerging female artists, Sienna Ko and Woo Nayeon, are exhibited simultaneously online and offline alongside their respective digital versions. Going beyond simply transferring canvas artworks into high-resolution images online, G-1.ART sought to digitize the foundational meaning and philosophical message that the artists intend to convey through their work.Through this process, G-1.ART's exhibition transcends the spatial constraints of traditional art forms and display methods. It delivers an experience where the essence of the work and the artist's message are fully conveyed to both online and offline audiences while preserving their aesthetic beauty. In doing so, it drives innovation in how original fine art and its digital iterations are exhibited, while boldly posing fundamental questions such as "What do we exhibit?" and "What do we own, buy, and sell?"The digitization of abstract paintings and collages composed of the simplest lines, planes, and colors—together with a completely novel display and presentation method for these digital creations—will offer audiences a profound philosophical play that reaches far beyond the simplicity of visual elements.
