To Hold, To Resemble

[Chuly Lee, Ceramic Artist] Since beginning his practice in ceramics in 2003, Chuly Lee has explored the uncontrollable forms of nature and the hidden aesthetic value of things that often go unnoticed. His work begins with humble objects—dried branches, wildflowers, discarded newspapers, and other materials that have seemingly exhausted their purpose or escaped our attention. By combining these objects with clay, a material drawn from the earth, Lee transforms the ephemeral into enduring ceramic forms. ​ Through the unpredictable processes of shaping and firing, the original objects disappear, yet their traces remain. Their delicate textures are preserved in clay and given a new physical permanence. This tension between fragility and strength, disappearance and rebirth, lies at the heart of Lee’s practice. ​ [Damda, Dalmda — To Hold, To Resemble] In Damda, Dalmda, Lee presents a new body of ceramic works inspired by the landscape of Jeju Island. ​ Developed from his encounter with Jeju’s natural environment during Somang, Damda in Jeju, a collaborative exhibition with artist Ayung Kang, the works reflect the island’s distinctive volcanic terrain, basalt formations, blue sea, and unique ecosystem. ​ Through subtle variations in texture, color, and form, Lee captures both the tranquility and remarkable resilience of Jeju’s landscape. The tactile presence of volcanic stone is particularly central to the exhibition, translated into ceramic surfaces that feel at once geological and organic. ​ Rooted in the artist’s deep respect for nature, Damda, Dalmda invites viewers to encounter Jeju from a different perspective—not simply as a landscape to be observed, but as something held, transformed, and remembered through material. ​ Each work carries a different trace of the island, revealing Lee’s attempt to preserve its quiet beauty and powerful vitality in clay. ​ ​ [이철영, 도예작가] 2003년 도자 세계에 발을 들인 도예가 이철영은 '심층적인 미적 가치’에서 오는 호기심에 기반해 특히 자연물의 형태에 대한 통제 불가능성을 연구하며, 사람들이 주목하지 않는 것들을 되살리는 작업을 작품의 핵심가치로 여깁니다. 자연에서 온 소품들, 예를 들어 마른 나뭇가지나 들꽃 등, 혹은 버려진 신문지와 같이 그 가치를 다했거나 가치를 인정받지 못하는 물체들을 작품활동의 영적이자 질적인 모티브로 삼고 그 위에 자연에서 온 재료인 흙을 더해 도자기의 형태로, 즉 실체로 재전환하는 작업을 이어오고 있습니다. 이렇게 선택된 오브제들은 도자기의 제작 과정에서 비롯되는 무한한 형태적 통제 불가능성과 가소성, 그리고 그 결과물의 높은 경도를 통해 그 실체가 사라짐과 동시에 강인한 실존적 생명력을 부여받습니다. 그래서 이철영 작가의 모든 작품은 원 오브제의 섬세한 텍스처를 유지하면서도 도자기 특유의 유려한 단단함을 있는 그대로 보여줍니다. [닮다, 담다] 작가는 이번 전시 를 통해 제주도의 자연을 담은 도예 신작들을 선보입니다. 강아영 작가와의 협업으로 기획된 전에서 제주도 특유의 자연을 접하고 그 요소들을 작품에 투영, 발전시켰습니다. 특히 제주도의 화산 지형과 현무암이 주는 오감적 고양이 이번 전시의 중심을 이루고 있습니다. 작가는 제주도 특유의 지질적 요소들과 푸른 바다, 그 안의 독특한 생태계를 결대로 살려낸 색채와 질감을 작품에 담아 제주도의 평온함을, 또한 강인한 생명력을 동시에 전달합니다. 제주도의 자연과 환경에 대한 작가의 깊은 존경과 애정을 바탕으로 제작된 이번 전시 작품들을 통해 관객은 제주도의 자연을 새로운 시각으로 경험할 수 있습니다. 제주도가 지닌 강렬하면서도 다채로운 자연미를 극적으로 전달하기 위해 각 도자기 작품마다 미묘하게 다른 질감과 색채를 담으려 깊이 애쓴 작가의 의도를 발견하는 것도 이번 전시의 관람 포인트입니다.​
