ARTISTS

Small acts guided by sincere wishes possess a quiet beauty: a prayer offered for oneself and others, 108 bows performed before dawn, a lock fastened to a bridge in the hope of everlasting love, or a donation made in response to tragedy.

What makes these gestures beautiful is not whether they can truly change the world, but the meaning we give them. We willingly offer something of value—our time, our labor, our possessions—and entrust it to the simple hope that tomorrow might be better than today. Perhaps it is in these moments, when we surrender control and choose to believe, that we come closest to our most vulnerable and purest selves.

The Korean tradition of stacking stones while making a wish carries this same spirit. Found along mountain paths and quiet resting places, each stone tower contains countless unknown stories. Who placed the first stone? What was wished for as another was carefully balanced above it?

Each ordinary stone has itself been shaped over an immeasurable span of time. When these stones are gathered and stacked, individual wishes and geological time converge. A small stone tower becomes something much larger: a universe of time, memory, and hope.

For years, artist Kang Ah young has painted these stone towers using the meticulous sepil technique of traditional Korean painting. Through countless delicate brushstrokes, she gives each stone its own texture, weight, and presence. Up close, the works reveal extraordinary precision; from a distance, however, their physical logic begins to dissolve.

There is no single gravity, no fixed perspective, and no unified source of light. Each tower exists independently while simultaneously orbiting the others. No one tower is the protagonist. Instead, they coexist—individual worlds quietly held together within the warmth of jangji, traditional Korean paper.

In Kang’s more recent works, this universe turns toward her children.

After becoming a mother of two and stepping away from her artistic practice for many years, her children have emerged as her most powerful source of inspiration. At first, the monochromatic stone towers and the vivid presence of children seem to belong to entirely different worlds. Yet they share something essential: neither creates itself, and yet both contain within themselves an extraordinary sense of possibility, purity, and infinity.

Children illuminate the world simply by being in it.

Perhaps through them, Kang’s stone towers have finally encountered the brighter light they had been waiting for—just as our own difficult and imperfect lives are so often illuminated anew through the children we love.
